Three members of the Atlee Raiders Wrestling Program capped off a fantastic wrestling season with a trip to the VHSL 5A State Tournament at Oscar Smith High School. Members of the Atlee Shield (Student Newspaper) caught up with the 3 athletes to recap their season.
Evan Buchanan, 9
Place:2nd in state
Weight class: 113lbs
Q: What was your initial reaction when learning that you qualified for states?
“I’ve been to bigger tournaments, so I’m kind of used to it, but it’s still exhilarating because I’m a freshman”
Robbie Adelstein, 11
Place: 3rd in state
Weight class: 220lbs
Q: What have you done, both mentally and physically to prepare
for the state competition? “Mentally, I tried not to think too much about my opponents and just enjoy being at states. Physically, after practice, I would go for a run and try to eat the right food that would fuel me.”
Mariano Hornedo 12
6th Place in State
Weight Class: 120 lb
Q: How has this season differed from other seasons where you have or have not qualified for states?
“It’s just longer and it’s more work. In seasons that you don’t qualify for states, it’s optional whether you come into school or not to help the guys that did make it to states. So when you do make it to states, it makes it a little harder. It’s just increasing work, more cutting weights and just a lot more time”
